Description:
The film documents many people and places in the town of Grand Island beginning with the earliest settlement up to the mid 1920s. Some of the early photos/images are the first house in the area owned by Mark Stelic, 1857; the old County Court House, 1872; sod house of Adam Windolph, built in 1866; the Union Pacific depot and eating house, 1876. Other buildings shown are the early hotels including the Hotel Yancey completed in 1922; the current County Court House built in 1900; the first bank, 1878; first brick business building, Henry Vieregg, 1877. Two panoramic views of the city are shown, one from 1874 and another from 1926. Students from several schools are featured as well as the Superintendent of Schools, Ella M. Kern. Several industrial plants are shown along with their founders and employees including Justice-Alexander Co., 1919; Ulery-Talbert Co., 1919; Fairmont Creamery. Other businesses shown are the Grand Island National Bank (and officers); Central Power Plant and the Grand Island Horse and Mule Market. The Municipal Band marching on the streets and a man and woman dancing the Charleston on a sidewalk are included. The film also has brief images of many, many City and County Officials. The names of some of the individuals are: Mayor M.W. Jenkins, Police Judge Kirk, Chief of Police Bruce Francisco, Fire Chief Thomas Dillon, County Judge Mullin, County Treasurer Hugo Meves, County Sheriff Jay Palmer, Register of Deeds Richard Buenz, County Assessor C.I. Cates, City Clerk Lyle, Clerk of the District Court Clinton John, District Judge Bayard H. Payne, Superintendent of Schools C. Ray Gates, Principal of GI High School Paul Harnley. Others identified were Photographer Locke, Incorporators of the city of Grand Island O.A. Abbott, Sr., Charles Wasmer and James Cleary, Commissioner of the GI Chamber of Commerce Dave Trail, early settler Henry Vieregg, early store owner S. N. Wolbach, Catholic Bishop Duffey (shown breaking ground for new cathedral). Members of the Kiwanis Club, Rotary Club and Chamber of Commerce are shown as well as the staff of the Grand Island Independent newspaper. Police Detective Massinger and his blood hounds are also seen.
