Description:
This is an interior studio photograph of three star players from "Guy Green's Nebraska Indians Baseball Team." The postcard photograph is believed to be from circa 1910. Printed on the bottom of the card is the following, "Three of Our Stars. Green's Nebraska Indian Baseball Team. Only Ones On Earth. Established 1897. Guy W. Green, Sole Owner, and manager. LINCOLN, Nebraska."The three players are standing next to each other in a relatively plain, unadorned studio setting. Each players's "uniform" (a.k.a., costume) is visible from head-to-toe. The players on the extreme left and extreme right of the image are both wearing generic looking Native American style clothing. The attire could be considered emblematic of clothing represented during this period of American history as being from the Great Plains region. The loose fitting clothing consists of pants and tunic style top. The type of material used for these outfits is not readily discernible from the image but does generally appear to be a cloth material - that is, the outfits do not appear to be made of leather, which would have been the customary and more common material used for authentic Native American apparel of this nature. Both players are wearing maccasins - i.e., not baseball or similar athletic footwear of the time period. Each of the players sporting Native American attire also have on Native American headgear in the form of feathered warbonnets. The headgear for the player on the left of the image appears to be a "buffalo horn headdress", which often involved a soft helmet of buffalos hide with buffalo horns attached. This player's headdress also has a cascading trail of feathers reaching to the floor. The headgear on the player to the right of image is reministic of the trailer war bonnet, with a crown of feathers topping the garment. It is not possible to determine from the image the length of the war bonnets trail, although it is evident the feathered trail does not extend to the floor and more likely extends only midway down the players back. The third player in the image - and one standing in the middle between the two other team players - is Dan Tobey, who was one of the few non-Indian members of Green's Nebraska Indian Baseball Team. Tobey is wearing a clown's outfit, which was his trademark. The outfit consists of very loose fitting knicker-style pants and companion loose fitting shirt which is topped with a matching ruffled collar. He is also wearing a light color cone-style hat made of a soft material. Tobey has on moccasin-like shoes with ribbed socks or stockings extending to his knees (i.e., the bottom of his knicker-style pants). He is also holding a small megaphone in his left hand which is displayed in front of his chest.
