This record group consists of the records of the NebraskaMilitary Department, 1855 to the present. These records includemilitia and volunteer units, home guard units, and the NebraskaNational Guard. The records are arranged in three subgroups: 1)Records relating to militia and volunteer units, 1855-1880; 2)Records of the Nebraska National Guard, 1871-1983; and 3) Recordsof home guard units, 1918-1920.Subgroup One, records relating to militia and volunteer units,contains seven series: 1) Militia Units Correspondence and MusterRolls, 1855-1880; 2) Volunteer Units Correspondence and MusterRolls, 1861-1880; 3) Orders and Circulars, 1861-1880; 4) OversizeMuster Rolls, Rosters and Descriptive Books, 1861-1880; 5) Reportsand Returns, 1861-1869; 6) Clothing and Property Records, 1861-1869; and 7) Miscellany, 1859-1880. The records of Subgroup Onedocument the service of volunteer units which fought during theCivil War and against the plains Indians. The bulk of the recordsare contained in Series Four and Five.Subgroup Two consists of records relating to the National Guard, 1871-1983, and is split into 14 series: 1) Correspondence and reports, 1881-1963; 2) Orders and circulars, 1881-1941; 3) Quartermaster records, 1891-1908; 4) Muster rolls, rosters, personnel, and payroll, 1881-1919; and Duty rosters, 1925-1949; 5) Armory files, 1895-1919; 6) Inspection and training, 1912-1919; 7) 134th Infantry Regiment, 1927-1957; 8) Administrative and fiscal records, 1888-1919; 9) Emergency duty records, 1913-1982; 10) Fourth Army records, 1937-1938; 11) Reports, 1871-1974; 12) Descriptive lists, 1881-1911; 13) Miscellaneous, 1881-1983; 14) Printed materials: reports, plans, studies, 1955-1976.Subgroup Three consists of Home Guard Unit records, 1917-1920.
