Description:
Typescript of a diary kept by Chapman, March 15 to June 12, 1859. The diary details of his roundtrip journey from Rockford, Illinois, to Plattsmouth, Nebraska Territory, and back to Illinois. His original intention was to go to Pike's Peak to prospect for gold. Chapman describes the terrain; the weather; efforts to feed the animals; and the towns he goes through in Illinois, Iowa, and eastern Nebraska, specifically Nebraska City and Plattsmouth. After hearing reports of poor prospecting at Pike's Peak, Chapman returned to Illinois from Plattsmouth.
