Description: Interior studio portrait of an unidentified Pawnee Indian. On the back of the photograph a caption is written in German. The translations reads, "An old Indian which was a member of the "Scili" (Pawnee) troupe, with war club (with iron lance tip) and neclace of grizzly bear claws, and a buffalo robe. This was probably the troup which perished in the fire of the Hamburg steamer "Chimria" on the high seas. The Indians are supposed to have used their tomahawks wildly in the fight for room in the life boats. --Friedrich Weygold."According to note from George E. Hyde, the photograph was sent to him from Germany while he was writing his "Pawnee History." Hyde writes, "They seen to be Pawnees who were with Buffalo Bill's Wild West in 1888, when the show broke up in Germany and these were rumors of bad treatment of Indians. I cannot read the German writing on back of photos --George E. Hyde, 1955"
