Description:
While J. Sterling Morton first created Arbor Day in 1872, it was not recognized as a holiday by the government until Governor Robert Furnas issued this proclamation on March 31, 1874. He urged Nebraskans to observe Arbor Day on April 8, 1874 "by planting forest, fruit or ornamental trees."
